A harpy can be a mother too.

Part of my final for my Illustration class from last Fall. Expect more from this series sometime this summer, I’m completely reworking them after this semester.

Painting I did for my Digital Painting class from last fall.

In this class I got to design a race of aliens using concept art techniques. It was a lot of fun! And I learned how to do a ton of neat sneaky secrets(sneacrets) in Photoshop. Unfortunately I didn’t get many portfolio pieces out of it. But with the knowledge I’ve gained from this course I’m sure to produce some!

Landscape speed painting for my Digital Painting class of Fall(2012). I learned a whole lot in this class, unfortunately I only got a couple of portfolio pieces out of it. We spent most of the semester learning all about the different tricks and tools of Photoshop.

One of my goals for 2013 is to utilize the abilities I learned from this class to better my style and further expand my portfolio.

First project I completed for my intermediate illustration class of the fall(2012) semester. We had to create an editorial spread illustration with a self written short paragraph about our summer vacation(I excluded that part of the image, you’re welcome).

Basically, because I live in North Carolina, it rained for most of the summer. So I was stuck in doors at my friend Kristen’s house. Every day was a tea party. I felt like I was 5 again, a lot more fun than it sounds. We’re both kind of introverted so this was pretty much like heaven to me.
Kristen also has a giant cat who always joined in on our party, hence the mad-hatter feline in the center.
I’m on the left and Kristen is on the far right.

Looking back on my work from 2012 has motivated me to REALLY work on my anatomy. I’m tired of making the same mistakes over and over and over again. I’m going to push myself this year and break my bad habits. I’m going to have a kick-ass style that I can be proud of by next fall.

That is my New Year’s resolution.

Tomorrow I start posting my work from the fall(2012) semester. After I’ve finished posting ALL of that, I’m going to keep an anatomy sketch book and post at least one page a week. By writing this here I know I can keep my goal.

Here’s to a productive 2012!

Final project for my Illustration: Media and Techniques class I took last spring(2012). For this project we were supposed to use oil glazing, but we ran out of time so I completed it with Photoshop. We had to complete two illustrations that were related to either the Chinese zodiac, the Greek zodiac, or tarot cards. I chose the Greek zodiac.

The top one is Aquarius, the water carrier. An air sign that many people mistake for a water sign, this is why I’ve placed him in the sky. Aquarius’s are supposed to be highly intelligent motivated people, but even though they often mean well, they can be somewhat clumsy. So he’s slipping and spilling his water on to the bottom figure…who is…

Virgo, the virgin. Even though she is often figured with angelic wings, she is an earth sign. Virgos are supposed to be peaceful and down to earth, but they can also be obsessive perfectionist. I read -somewhere- that Virgos make excellent gardeners(no I don’t remember where).

I also remember reading -somewhere- that Aquarius’s tend to annoy Virgos do to their clumsy/sporadic nature. which is why I had to place Virgo directly under Aquarius’s soon to be mess.

In reality I don’t really know that much about the Greek zodiac, I only know what I read from MANY different websites in preparation for this project. It was fun doing the research, though I’m not really happy with how the finals came out. I might revisit this project sometime this summer.

Painting for my water color class from last spring(2012). For this work we had to incorporate 7 birds into a composition using only water media.

Randomfact: All the Birds up here are native to North Carolina.

Water colors on cotton paper(btw, DON’T ever use cotton paper with water color; after a few strokes the cotton fibers will begin to lift and tear!)

Circus painting I did for my watercolor class I took last spring(2012). For this work I had to use the theme ‘Circus,’ I decided that I’d use it a literally as I could, so we have a circus, in a circle, with as many round things I could fit. yep.

In reality though, circuses are awful. Animals in circuses are horribly exploited and abused for the entertainment of people and that really just makes me sick. Now, NOT ALL CIRCUSES USE ANIMALS, but the ones that do..are bad. I don’t mean to get all preachy, and I’m sure I’ve offended someone out there(maybe someone who was raised by circus clowns?). But I know how the internet works and I don’t want to see any comments about I support the miss-treatment of animals when I don’t. This is art, and it’s also school work. I did it because I had to and I wanted a good grade. No animals were harmed in the making of this piece. Not even in the making of my watercolor brushes because I only use synthetic.

OK, enough of that!

Coraline Book Cover

Book cover project for my Illustration Media and techniques class I took last spring(2012). For this project we had to pick two books by the same author and create two covers that worked off of each other in water media(water color).

For my books I chose Neil Gaiman’s ‘Coraline’ and ‘Stardust.’

I feel like the Coraline cover is the weaker of the two I created. I kind of rushed it, but I learned that it’s better to experiment with color studies then to just jump right in. This piece has been heavily edited digitally to get the colors right. I still feel like I could have done Coraline’s cover better and I might revisit this piece in the future.

The Stardust cover earned me an honorable mention in the local Rebel show and will be featured in the Rebel’s yearly publication alongside my ‘FancyFoxTeaParty’ (which earned 2nd place in the Illustration competition).

My style is slowly evolving into something that I can be proud of, I still have a long way to go though(:
